You may have noticed that a wonderful new designer has joined the Yarn Stories stable when we launched our Mimosa Memories collection. Jo Allport’s headline design, Mimosa, has had a lot of attention, so we thought it was time to find out a bit more about this talented lady.
Like many of us Jo’s Nana taught her when she was about 6, but how did she become a designer? “It was almost by accident. Having worked in the corporate world all my life, I wanted to do something more creative, and having knitted and sewn since I was very young, it was a natural side step into the design world,” she told us.
What we have always admired about Jo’s design is her sense of style and attention to detail. She has created many wonderful patterns for UK knitting magazines so you are sure to have seen some of her work. She explained her creative process: “I see design ideas in everything, from the natural world, to architecture. Turning them into something commercial takes a little more time. I try to take a structured approach to design from initial idea through to the final, finished product.”
Jo finds inspiration just about everywhere. “I take snapshots, which may be in my head not necessarily with a camera, that I can use for inspiration.” Oh, how we wish we had a brain like that. At the moment, Jo is very drawn to slip stitch patterns, both with colour and just to add texture. You’ll see she has used this technique in Mimosa.
She then takes these ideas to her much-loved, purpose-built studio close to her house. It overlooks the trees and gives Jo the space to have all her projects in one place without being too overcrowded, which is essential because she tells us she hates mess.
So why did Jo agree to work with us at Yarn Stories? “Given a choice I will always choose natural yarns, and Yarn Stories yarns are so wonderful to work with, along with your extensive colour palette, so I choose them often.” Thank you, Jo. We can’t wait to see what you design for us next.
