The very lovely Charlotte Johnson is our in-house designer. She is super-talented and designs across our four brands – quite a feat. What she creates is always fresh with intriguing little twists and turns in the pattern and styling that is sure to keep knitters of all abilities happy.
We managed to grab a little time with Charlotte as she worked on ideas for Spring Summer 2018.
Charlotte has always been interested in fashion and design: “I did an Art and Design course at college, which is where I became extremely interested in the construction of fabrics and how to manipulate them. I then moved onto a textiles degree at the University of Derby where I became particularly interested in Knit Design. I drove my tutor mad arriving in Britannia mill at Derby University early in the morning and not leaving until it was dark.” Her inquisitive nature has certainly paid off.
Her design style is quite organic, the ideas just flow blending and forming into clean, timeless pieces with a focus on stitch details and a manipulation of shape to create a new vibrant twist on old classics. But where does the inspiration come from? “I’m tremendously inspired by travel. I love to explore new places and see the beautiful world we live in, always looking for the intricate details of buildings, as well as the feel and emotion of a place. I also find inspiration in history, of days gone by and the way fashion and the arts or music have changed from decade to decade,” Charlotte told us.
Even though Charlotte is a very accomplished designer in her own right, she does have a few favourite designers of her own: “I’m a huge fan of Michelle Wang, her designs are classic pieces that are so easy to wear will be part of your wardrobe for years. I love Debbie Bliss, her baby wear is just the cutest! As for fashion, I fall in love with Max Mara over and over again every season; the Fall17 collection evokes the romantic in me. With the beautiful knitted coats and light weight opaque roll necks.” We’d better go and check out that collection.
Charlotte has now designed over 20 designs for Yarn Stories and there are more in the pipeline for autumn. Our absolute favourite is Quicksilver and Charlotte’s is Alabaster.
So why should knitters and crocheters try out Yarn Stories? We left the last word to Charlotte: “Part of the reason, for me would be the construction - how clean and round it is which gives great stitch definition. And it feels amazing too… especially the Baby Alpaca blend.’
