Nick Atkinson’s aunt taught him to knit one rainy weekend when he was about 8: “I was just really interested in the stitches, so I used to knit very long samplers.” His fascination with stitch and the engineering of knitted fabrics stayed with him.
It was as an art student that he first knitted two sweaters for himself from a pattern. One was a success, the other was not. But he had learned a really valuable lesson from reading these patterns. He had worked out how to shape a garment and from then on has always knitted everything just by eye and a tension square of course!
Nick went to Art College to study printed textiles followed by a Masters degree in knitwear. “My first job, just a week after leaving education, was with the lovely Zandra Rhodes.” Since then Nick has worked with a wide range of great design brands such as Gucci, Donna Karan and Pringle. Nick was responsible for the cable yoke for Pringle catwalk that became so popular a few years ago.
Nick is always knitting. His passion is the stitch and he is always thinking of how he can invent a new stitch or reinterpret a classic and has been selling his swatches to design houses across the world. You will never have seen stitch patterns quite like the ones Nick produces and you will look at your knitting in a totally different way once you have tried them.
