Sasha Kagan is one of the most famous names in knitwear. We were so excited when we asked her to get involved with Yarn Stories and she said yes. In fact she was one of the first people to try out our yarn prototypes and her feedback really helped to make our yarns what they are today.
Sasha actually studied as a painter and went on to the Royal College of art to further her education in print making. She established her hand-made knitwear business selling her debut collection to Browns in South Molton St after the success of her first hand-knitted commission for Alice Ormsby-Gore, the then girlfriend of Eric Clapton. “I started in knitwear design when I moved to Wales in the early 70’s. Hand knits were a way of being both being creative and earning a living in an isolated area”, she explains. Sasha’s business quickly grew and soon she had outlets in London, Milan, Berlin, New York and San Francisco.
Sasha’s stitch detailing, combined with her original use of intarsia motifs and her love of nature gives her work a unique style.
“What I like about knitting is its flexibility, with just 2 needles, a few balls of yarn, patience and inspiration you can knit up almost anything! I am excited about working on the Yarn Stories project as it offers the designer a chance to broaden the possibilities of hand knitting,” she says.
